Holocaust Denial & Hate on the InterNet
Groups and individuals who dispute that the Nazis systematically exterminated an estimated six million people, most of them Jews, have made increasing use of the Internet to proselytize their beliefs and recruit new adherents since late 1991. Their contributions, usually anonymous, to interactive Internet topical discussion groups like alt.revisionism, soc.history and soc.culture.german, frequently express a vitriolic hatred of Jews and Judaism. In addition, they insist that there were no homicidal gas chambers anywhere in Nazi Europe, that virtually all evidentiary documentation, including the 10,000 or more entered into evidence during the First Nurnberg Tribunal, was forged. They claim that all eyewitness testimony, which supports the accepted historiography of the Holocaust, is false, while at the same time accepting any testimony from perpetrators which tends to support their claims as valid. "The Holocaust is a big lie," wrote one writer. "I wish there had been a Holocaust and that we could have another one." In short, "The Holocaust did not happen and the Jews deserved what they got." In 1991, Ken McVay began compiling information that addressed and refuted the lies being published by Holocaust deniers. In time, he amassed tens of thousands of such documents, and, in 1995, made them available to the world via The Nizkor Project. The Nizkor Project has grown into one of the most substantial and Holocaust education websites in the world, and now includes the complete transcripts of the 1st Nurnberg Military Tribunal and the Trial of Adolf Eichmann. In addition, the Nizkor Project has archived an extensive collection of articles published by deniers and analysed their duplicitous methods for publish consumption. Nizkor offers comprehensive and thoroughly documented Holocaust Research Guides, which are published on a regular schedule and archived worldwide. The Guide titles include “Auschwitz-Birkenau,” “Aktion Reinhard,” “The Leuchter Report” and “Willis Carto & the IHR.” These guides present the claims made by Holocaust deniers and refute them with well documented rebuttals. The site offers featured modules aimed directly at refuting claims made by Holocaust deniers. One, “The Techniques of Holocaust Denial” takes direct aim at specific denier claims and refutes them with well researched and documented facts. The site features web pages dealing with the Aktion Reinhard death camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Bergen Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Maidanek, Mauthausen, Nordhausen and others, and offers ftp archives containing documented information about many more camps. There are pages focused on specific individuals, including Holocaust deniers, scholars and “just plain folk” who have contributed to the issues at hand, and worldwide organizations, “good, bad and ugly,” which have contributed information about Holocaust historiography, far right extremism and antisemitism. These organizations include noted human rights advocacy groups, neo-Nazi groups, the Ku Klux Klan and similar groups of current or historical interest.
